Aid Code Definitions Expanded for ARPA Postpartum Care Extension

March 16, 2022

Effective April 1, 2022, as part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), an individual eligible for pregnancy and postpartum care services under Medi-Cal or the Medi-Cal Access Program (MCAP) is entitled to 365 days (12 months) of postpartum care coverage. This coverage shall include the full breadth of medically necessary services during pregnancy and the postpartum period. ARPA Postpartum Care Extension (PCE) is automatic for all Medi-Cal or MCAP eligible individuals who report a pregnancy or are postpartum, regardless of immigration status or how the pregnancy ends. The individual does not have to request it or provide any additional information.

In preparation for this extension of postpartum care services, the definition of several aid codes within the Medi-Cal Automated Eligibility Verification System (AEVS) have been updated to reflect this expanded coverage. Effective April 1, 2022, individuals who are impacted by the postpartum care extension of ARPA will automatically have their coverage extended to allow for 365 days of postpartum care, instead of the limited scope of coverage provided by the Provisional Postpartum Care Extension (PPCE) previously supported by the Department of Health Care Services. Providers should see this reflected in AEVS eligibility checks that are run, beginning April 1, 2022.

More information regarding ARPA PCE, can be found on the Pregnancy page of the Medi-Cal Providers website.

The ARPA PCE will replace the PPCE, which ends March 31, 2022.
