Transportation, Treatment Covered for COVID-19 Uninsured Group, Restricted Scope

October 25, 2021

The COVID-19 Uninsured Group program provides temporary, no-cost diagnostic testing, testing-related services, and treatment services, including all medically necessary care, for individuals without other coverage, including those without private insurance, Medi-Cal, or Medicare, and those whose private health insurance does not cover all medically necessary care for COVID-19. In addition, Medi-Cal covers treatment for COVID-19, including adverse reactions for vaccines, for individuals with restricted scope. Providers should bill Medi-Cal and not the beneficiary.

Coverage includes all forms for Medi-Cal covered transportation – emergency, nonemergency medical, and nonmedical – for individuals in the COVID-19 Uninsured Group to receive treatment, including vaccines and treatment for adverse reactions to the vaccine. Transportation providers should bill Medi-Cal directly for services provided to this group. We would like to remind providers that beneficiaries who receive services related to COVID-19 diagnosis and/or vaccine reaction may be part of the COVID-19 Uninsured Group with retroactive coverage for their transport.
