Broadband Benefit for Medi-Cal Beneficiaries

June 7, 2021

The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) has identified a potential funding opportunity for Medi-Cal recipients seeking to use telehealth services as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. Providers are encouraged to inform Medi-Cal recipients of this opportunity as soon as possible to ensure that they can benefit from the limited offering.

All Medi-Cal recipients are eligible for the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) program which provides up to $50 of assistance a month to help cover the cost of internet access. The monthly discounted internet service will be available until EBB funds are used up, or up to six months after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, whichever is sooner.

It is important to note that there is a limited amount of funds available and Medi-Cal recipients should apply immediately, before the funds are completely allocated. Recipients can apply:

  • Through the Get Emergency Broadband

  • By mail to: Emergency Broadband Support Center, P.O. Box 7081, London, Kentucky 40742.

Additionally, as part of the EBB program, certain service providers may discount up to $100 toward a one-time purchase of a qualifying, connected device such as a laptop, tablet, or computer. Recipients should refer to the California section of this list of internet providers for more information regarding what Broadband Providers are participating in the EBB program, and of those, which are offering discounts on connected devices.

Recipients are eligible for the EBB program if just one person in the household meets any of the following requirements:

  • Loss of income from job loss since February 29, 2020, and income is less than $99,000 annually, or

  • Receive food assistance through SNAP (food stamps), or

  • Receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments, or

  • Receive Medicaid or

  • Receive Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit.

Medi-Cal recipients interested in the EBB program may call 1-833-511-0311or email with questions. The EBB program phone line is available from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. PST, seven days a week.
