NPPES Health Care Provider Data Update
The National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) health care provider data, which is required to be disclosed to the public under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), will now be made publicly available on August 1, 2007, 60 days after the publication date of the Data Dissemination Notice.
In order for providers to have their updates, changes and deletions reflected in the initial downloadable file of NPPES data, the information had to be submitted to NPPES by July 16, 2007. Updates, changes and deletions made prior to this deadline will be included in the initial downloadable NPPES file. After the initial downloadable file is made available, an update file will be available each month thereafter. Any updates, changes and deletions made after this deadline will be reflected in the appropriate monthly update file that can also be downloaded.
For example:
- An update submitted July 26, 2007 would be reflected in the first update file one month after the creation of the initial NPPES downloadable file.
- An update submitted on August 30, 2007 would be effective after the creation of the first monthly update file and reflected in the second monthly update file one month after the previous month’s file update.
The initial file and all update files will be available for download from the NPPES Web site. All updates, changes and deletions will also be reflected in the National Provider Identifier (NPI) Registry at the same time they are refelcted in NPPES. The NPI Registry will operate in a real-time environment; therefore, the July 16 date is insignificant with respect to the data in the NPI Registry.
Providers are encouraged to read the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) Data
Elements – Data Dissemination – Information for Providers document for more information.
Still Confused?
Not sure what an NPI is and how you can get it, share it and use it? More information can be found on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Web site.
Providers can apply for an NPI online on the NPPES Web site or call the NPI enumerator to request a paper application at 1-800-465-3203.
Getting an NPI is free - not having one can be costly.
