NPI: Provider Identification Number Reissue Update

What's New

April 3, 2008

Providers who have switched from a “one-to-many” National Provider Identifier (NPI) registration to a “one-to-one” NPI registration will receive a new Provider Identification Number (PIN) for each new NPI.

Providers that initially registered one NPI to more than one Medi-Cal provider number had the PIN from the first Medi-Cal provider number registered transfer over to the NPI record. When providers decide to “sub-part” and register a different NPI for each provider number they possess, a new PIN will be generated for each NPI record. Providers will receive a new welcome letter notifying them of the new PIN(s). Only the new PINs for each NPI record will be valid for any Medi-Cal online and telephone transactions.

Using the associated Medi-Cal provider number(s) following a claim submission with an NPI will result in claim denials for subsequent dates of service. Once providers begin using their NPI on claim submissions, they are strongly encouraged to continue using the NPI to prevent claim payment interruption.

Frequently Asked Question

Question:

If a provider registered multiple Medi-Cal legacy numbers with one NPI and then decides to register separate NPIs for each Medi-Cal legacy provider number, does the provider use the old PINs with the new NPIs?

Answer:

No. When a provider obtains new NPIs for each of the Medi-Cal legacy numbers, a new record with a new PIN will be created for each of the NPIs. Providers will receive a letter notifying them of the PINs associated with the new NPIs . Providers must use the new PINs, not the PINs associated with the legacy numbers.
