Dual-Use Period Ends: Registration Continues After NPI Implementation

December 21, 2007

Effective December 17, 2007, the date of NPI implementation, Medi-Cal providers can use the National Provider Identifier (NPI) for all claims and provider transaction services. However, providers who are not prepared to use the NPI may continue to submit their Medi-Cal provider number for claims and transaction services until instructed otherwise.

The recent “dual-use” period that required providers to use both the Medi-Cal provider number and NPI number on claims and transaction services has ended. Please refer to the NPI Update: End of Dual-Use Period article.

NPI Registration Continues
Providers may continue to register NPIs with Medi-Cal until further notice. Providers have until 5 p.m. on the same day they register with Medi-Cal to make any updates to their NPI information using the online NPI Collection (NPIC) tool. Providers who need to update NPI information or associate additional Medi-Cal provider number(s) with an NPI after 5 p.m. must submit a Medi-Cal Supplemental Changes form (DHCS 6209) to the Medi-Cal Provider Enrollment Division (PED).

For questions regarding NPI registration or updating registered NPI information, providers can call the Telephone Service Center (TSC) at 1-800-541-5555, and select language preference (option 11 for English; option 12 for Spanish), option 16 from the main menu, then option 18 from the submenu.
