NPI: Reminder to Register NPI with Medi-Cal
Providers must register their National Provider Identifier (NPI) with Medi-Cal using one of the three methods listed below, if they have not already done so. The deadline to register NPIs with Medi-Cal is November 25, 2007. Providers who are already registered but need to update their information may do so only through November 16, 2007.
Note:Although Medi-Cal plans to participate in the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) data dissemination process, it is not Medi-Cal’s intention to use the data to replace the current NPI registration process. Medi-Cal intends to use the data only to validate NPIs already registered.
The three methods to register are as follows:
- National Provider Identifier Collection (NPIC) tool – This tool allows NPIs to be registered one at a time, quickly and for free.
- NPI Bulk Registration Tool (BRT) – This tool is available to providers who would prefer to register multiple NPIs at the same time using the NPIC online system. Providers should review the BRT instructions for information about the NPI BRT and technical requirements.
- NPI paper registration – The paper registration process is intended for providers who do not have Internet access. The NPI Registration Form is available through the Telephone Service Center (TSC) at 1-800-541-5555. After completing the required information, providers return their form, along with their NPPES verification document to the address at the bottom of the form.
