NPI: Upcoming NPI Registration on the Medi-Cal Web Site
Updated: March 28, 2007
To help collect National Provider Identifier (NPI) numbers from Medi-Cal providers, the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) is developing an automated collection system utilizing the Medi-Cal Web site. The NPI collection will be an easy and cost-free registration process.
Early NPI registration with Medi-Cal better ensures providers of uninterrupted payment when the HIPAA-mandated transition takes place on May 23, 2007.
Further instruction about the NPI registration process and availability can be obtained by calling the Telephone Service Center (TSC) at 1-800-541-5555, selecting language preference (option 11 for English; option 12 for Spanish), selecting option 16 from the main menu, then selecting option 18 from the sub menu.
DHCS encourages providers to apply for their NPI on the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) Web site and to register that NPI with Medi-Cal.
For additional information about the NPI and its use, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) created an instructional tool called the NPI Viewlet. This tool provides an overview of the NPI, a review of the NPI application and a link to the NPPES Web site. Links and downloads regarding the NPI are available on the CMS NPI Overview Web page. To reach the NPI Viewlet, click the "Educational Resources" link and then the "NPI Viewlet" link.
