Family PACT Pharmacy TARs Accepted for Oral and Emergency Contraceptives

August 24, 2016

On July 19, 2016, the Department of Health Care Services released a NewsFlash article entitled Family PACT Offers Interim Alternative to Requesting a TAR to inform providers of an issue with requesting a Treatment Authorization Request (TAR) through the system for oral contraceptive products not included in the Drugs: Contract Drugs List Part 1 – Prescription Drugs sections in Part 2 of the Medi-Cal provider manual, as well as levonorgestrel emergency contraceptive products not included in the Drugs: Contract Drugs List Part 2 – Over-the-Counter Drugs section in Part 2 of the Medi-Cal provider manual for the Family Planning, Access, Care and Treatment (Family PACT) program.

Beginning August 1, 2016, providers may submit a pharmacy TAR, as clinically indicated, for oral contraceptives or levonorgestrel emergency contraceptive products not included in the contract drugs lists, as noted above, for Family PACT.

The recent policy updates were for pharmacy dispensing of oral contraceptives and emergency contraceptives only. The policy for clinic dispensing remains the same.
