National Drug Code (NDC) FAQs: Reporting Requirements

This category includes questions about National Drug Code (NDC) Reporting Requirements.

For additional questions, contact the Telephone Service Center (TSC) at 1-800-541-5555.

  1. What is the National Drug Code (NDC)?
A: The NDC is a number that identifies a prescription drug. The NDC number consists of 11 digits in 5-4-2 format.
  2. What is a physician-administered drug?
A: A physician-administered drug includes any covered outpatient drug provided or administered to a recipient that is billed by a provider other than a pharmacy. These providers would include, but not be limited to, physician offices, clinics and hospitals.
  3. Will Medi-Cal provide a "crosswalk" of HCPCS-to-NDC-codes?
A: Because the requirement is to bill using the NDC of the container which the prescription was dispensed from, there should not be a need for a crosswalk. In general, NDCs for CMS-approved labelers are crosswalked to the corresponding HCPCS within the same HCPCS description.
