The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) has delayed implementation of the Universal Product Number (UPN) pilot for an indefinite period of time.

Notification of the UPN pilot delay will be sent to providers who have expressed an interest in participating and/or completed the Request to Participate form. DHCS remains committed to the concept of the UPN as a means to streamline and expedite medical supply billing and payment. Providers will be notified when a firm implementation date for the pilot is available.

Please continue to bill for medical supplies according to existing policies until further notice. Providers are encouraged to review the information published in future Medi-Cal Updates and in the HIPAA News area of the Medi-Cal Web site for up-to-date details.
