HIPAA: Cancer Detection Programs - Every Woman Counts Regulatory Requirements for Services Delivered Outside the Clinic

May 30, 2006

Cancer Detection Programs: Every Woman Counts (CDP: EWC) providers must practice within Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations when delivering clinical services and while engaging in follow-up and case management of patients outside the normal clinic setting. Providers that collaborate with other organizations to assist with clinical service delivery must have Business Associate Agreements in place that specify appropriate use of and safeguards for Protected Health Information (PHI). In addition to assuring protection of PHI, CDP: EWC providers must also also ensure that there is no decrease in the quality of clinical services provided. The clinical service site must meet all Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) inspection standards.
