HIPAA: Discontinuance of Interim Procedure Codes and Modifiers for LEA Providers
March 8, 2006Effective for dates of service on or after July 1, 2006, Local Educational Agency (LEA) providers will be required to use national procedure codes and modifiers for all LEA claims. At that time, the interim LEA procedure codes and modifiers in use since 1992 will no longer be valid. Also effective July 1, 2006, the new HIPAA-compliant procedure codes and modifiers may be used for LEA claims with dates of service on or after April 1, 2003.
Updates to the LEA Provider Manual, which will be available on the Medi-Cal Web site and the LEA Medi-Cal Billing Option Program Web page on the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) Web site, will be released in the near future and will include step-by-step instructions.
