HIPAA: The main objectives of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act

hippa_logo.gif (4481 bytes) The main objectives of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) are to:
  • Improve the efficiency and effectiveness of health care systems through the establishment of national standards and requirements that enable uniform electronic exchange of certain health information
  • Protect a patient’s right to control access to their medical records

All data exchanged will be in the same secure format!

Providers will use one standard data format for all health care agencies including Medi-Cal, once the HIPAA standards and requirements are fully implemented. Encryption technologies will protect the data from unauthorized and improper uses.
