Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS): Annual Updates

OVERVIEW

This page provides information about the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).  HCPCS is a national, uniform coding structure developed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to standardize the coding systems used to process Medicare and Medicaid (Medi-Cal) claims on a national basis.

Annually and quarterly, CMS issues newly added, changed, and terminated Current Procedural Terminology – Fourth Revision (CPT-4) and HCPCS codes. These codes are reviewed by Medi-Cal and policy is developed. Providers are notified of the new policy and the effective date for the specified codes via provider bulletins and provider manual updates.
